Hammer blow Declan Rice suffers knee injury and ruled out of West Ham’s clash with Wolves in blow to club’s Premier League top four hopes

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has suffered a knee injury, talkSPORT understands.

The 22-year-old returned from England duty last week with a problem and will not play in Monday night’s Premier League clash at Molineux.

Rice is undergoing further tests and it is expected he will miss more than one match.

His absence – for any length of time – will come as a big blow to boss David Moyes.

Rice has become arguably West Ham’s most important player and has been an ever-present since the start of the 2019/20 season.

He has been key to West Ham’s incredible campaign so far which has them chasing an unlikely top four spot and Champions League qualification.

Rice has also become an integral part of the England team and Gareth Southgate will hope he returns to action soon, with the youngster nailed-on for a place in the European Championship squad.

Rice played the full 90 minutes for England in the wins over Albania and Poland last week in their World Cup qualifying games.

He returned to West Ham following the 2-1 win over Poland at Wembley on Wednesday, where it emerged he had a knee injury and has been in a leg brace since.

West Ham hope the issue is not serious, but it is feared he will not be fit for the visit of Leicester on Sunday and there are some concerns the lay-off will be longer than a few weeks.

Mark Noble, the club captain, is expected to take Rice’s place in the West Ham starting line-up against Wolves.

A win for the Hammers tonight will move them above Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham and into the top four.

Reacting to the news on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino said: “When you look at the role Fabinho does at Liverpool and that N’Golo Kante does for Chelsea, that is what Rice does for West Ham.

“He sits, he can pick things, he can see things, players trust him. He does the simplistic things that can affect a team really well, and he keeps the ball.

“It is a huge blow. He is West Ham’s best player.

“David Moyes has done an exceptional job of finding solutions and that is what he has to do with Declan Rice out now.”

Season over because we were too skint to bring in adequate cover.

I look forward to Noble standing two yards off the centre backs and demanding the ball for the rest of the season.

Well, at least the board have met their business plan for this season, so what else did you expect?

Can't risk our most marketable asset now that's done.

Re: Rice injured
I'm assuming that Noble will play a couple of games before Moyes grudgingly admits that he's not good enough.

The question then is, how do we set up without two defensive midfielders?

Or will someone like Pablo drop back?

Re: Rice injured
That's 2 out of the 3 positions where it was obvious to all we've needed to strengthen that have come back and bitten us on the arse this season.

Centre Mid & Striker.

Thank god Cresswell has found his form again and stay fit, otherwise that would have been all 3.

Conner Coventry? It normally scenarios like that would give him his opportunity.

Reminds me of when we lost Payet for a month and drew every game. Cost us champions league.

It's the pointless International games. Fine Poland in a qualifier but the likes of Albania, San Marino etc should have their own qualifying section to get in to the main qualifiers. Less teams that will never get to a World Cup in the main qualifiers mean less games and more competitive qualifying groups.

Apparently he took a knock during the England game and made it worse during 5 a side game when returning to training

Re: Rice injured
I'd play Formals, or even try Diop as the anchor with Soucek getting forward

Moyes won't, he only sees Noble as the option
